Chandigarh sits at 30.7 degrees north and 76.8 degrees east, at the foot of the Shivalik hills in northern India.[3] It runs on India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, the single offset that covers the entire country. Chandigarh serves as the joint capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana, while itself being administered as a Union Territory.[2]

The city is unique in India for being planned from scratch after independence. In 1950, the government commissioned Le Corbusier to design the new capital, and the resulting grid of numbered sectors organizes the city into a deliberate spatial order.[3] There is something fitting about a planned city on a single national timezone: both impose a rational uniformity. the Capitol Complex and UNESCO recognition

Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex, housing the High Court, Secretariat, and Legislative Assembly, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 as part of a transnational recognition of Le Corbusier’s architectural work.[4] The buildings are oriented to catch the Shivalik mountain views and the morning sun from the east. The design embeds solar orientation into the architecture itself.

Chandigarh’s population of approximately 1.1 million lives in a city with wide boulevards and a sector-grid system that makes navigation straightforward.[3] The northern latitude means winter mornings are cool, with January temperatures dropping to 4 or 5 degrees Celsius. Summer pushes past 40 degrees, and the monsoon arrives in late June.
