Creston, Canada · UTC-7 ☆

Creston, a small agricultural town in British Columbia’s Kootenay region, is one of the few places in Canada that permanently uses Mountain Standard Time, UTC-7, without observing daylight saving. While the rest of BC follows Pacific Time and shifts its clocks, Creston stays put. The IANA database assigns it America/Creston, a dedicated identifier for this single community’s timezone.

The history is local and stubborn. Creston’s farming communities resisted DST from its first introduction in 1918,[4] finding that shifting time twice a year disrupted livestock, irrigation schedules, and the rhythms of a farming town. British Columbia’s provincial government has allowed the exception to persist. When the rest of BC goes to PDT (UTC-7) in summer, Creston is still at UTC-7 but calling it MST. They end up at the same offset but through different legal designations.

An orchard valley doing it its own way

Creston sits in the Kootenay River valley, surrounded by wetlands protected as a wildlife area and orchards famous for apples and cherries. The harvest seasons don’t care about provincial clock policy. The town’s independence on the timezone question is of a piece with its character: a valley community that does things its own way, quietly, without much fuss.
