In 2026, the position is entirely reversed. Qatari fans will set alarms for 23:00 on a Friday night for Switzerland, then again for 01:00 on the following Wednesday morning for Canada. The Switzerland and Bosnia matches are manageable by the standards of Gulf late-night culture. Doha’s cafes and hotel sports bars operate past midnight routinely, and the summer heat means evenings are the preferred social window anyway. The 01:00 Canada match is the real test.

Qatar qualified for 2026 through the AFC pathway. The Aspire Academy, the player development program that has funded the national squad since 2004, has produced a more experienced group. Several players from the 2022 squad, who gained direct tournament experience even in defeat, will return to the stage in North American venues.

Doha’s diverse expatriate workforce, drawn from dozens of countries with their own teams in the tournament, will fill the same sports bars regardless of the Qatari schedule.
