Kano is Nigeria’s second-largest city and the dominant city of the Muslim north, an ancient Hausa city with over a millennium of continuous urban history.[3] It runs on West Africa Time, UTC+1, year-round, the same as Lagos and all of Nigeria. No daylight saving.

Kano is a predominantly Muslim city, and the Islamic lunar calendar structures religious and civic life alongside the civil clock. Ramadan, the month of fasting, transforms the city’s daily rhythm: the pre-dawn Suhoor meal, the sunset Iftar, and the night prayers create a different schedule for the entire month.

Friday prayers at the central mosque draw thousands. The Emir of Kano’s palace, Gidan Rumfa, built in the 15th century, has its own ceremonial calendar for the Durbar festivals and royal functions.[5]

The dyeing tradition of Kano

Kano has been a center of textile production for centuries. The Kofar Mata dye pits, still operating in the old city, use traditional indigo extracted from local plants in deep circular vats.[4] Cloth is repeatedly dipped and exposed to air, oxidation producing the characteristic deep blue. The pits have operated for over 500 years. The dyeing schedules are tied to the textile production cycle: soaking, dyeing, drying. Each stage has its own rhythm tied to the material more than the clock.
