Kŭlob (also written Kulyab) sits in southern Tajikistan, in the Khatlon Region, on the Yakhsu River, a tributary of the Panj.[3] It runs on Tajikistan Time, UTC+5, year-round, the same clock as Dushanbe. No daylight saving.

Tajikistan fixed its clocks permanently at UTC+5 in 1991 on independence, a clean break from the Soviet-era summer time adjustments. The decision aligned Tajikistan with the natural solar position for the country’s western extent.

Kŭlob played a significant political role during the Tajikistani civil war of 1992-1997. The city was a stronghold for forces that eventually prevailed, and the political identity of the region remains distinct from the north. This history gives the city a weight that its modest size doesn’t suggest.

At 37 degrees north, Kŭlob has meaningful seasonal light variation: about 10 hours in December, 14.5 in June. The surrounding landscape, mountains to the north and east, lower valleys to the south toward Afghanistan, creates dramatic early morning shadow patterns before the sun clears the ridgelines.

Cotton and aluminum are major economic activities of southern Tajikistan. TALCO, Central Asia’s largest aluminum smelter, is located in Tursunzoda in western Tajikistan.[4]
