Monterrey runs on America/Monterrey: UTC-6 year-round (Central Standard Time). The IANA identifier is distinct from America/Mexico_City for historical reasons, but both zones currently follow the same permanent schedule. Mexico abolished daylight saving time for most of the country in October 2022, and Nuevo León — not a border state — observes no DST. Monterrey’s clock is fixed.

Monterrey is capital of Nuevo Leon state and home to around 5.3 million people in the metro area.[4] At roughly 540 meters elevation[4] in the Sierra Madre foothills, it sits in the northern reaches of Mexico close to the Texas border. That proximity has shaped both the city’s economy and its daily rhythms for over a century.

Monterrey is one of the closest major Mexican cities to the United States, and its business culture reflects that. Many companies here operate dual schedules, aligned both with Mexico City headquarters and with Texas trading partners in the Central Time zone. The coincidence that Monterrey and Texas share Central Time simplifies logistics that would otherwise require constant mental conversion.

The city hosts the regional offices of hundreds of multinational manufacturers. The maquiladora economy that developed through the 1990s and accelerated under NAFTA created a business culture more oriented toward productivity metrics and punctuality than is typical in other Mexican cities. Monterrey is sometimes described as Mexico’s most “American” city in terms of work culture. That reputation is contested but not baseless.

World Cup 2026 on the northern frontier

Monterrey will host FIFA World Cup 2026 matches at Estadio BBVA, opened in 2015,[3] one of the newer and more architecturally striking venues in the tournament. The stadium sits against a backdrop of the Cerro de la Silla mountain,[4] which gives it a setting unlike any other World Cup venue. Visitors from the US Central timezone will find Monterrey’s clock familiar in winter. In summer, when Texas observes CDT (UTC-5) and Monterrey stays at CST (UTC-6), there is a one-hour gap. Kick-off at 7pm local time is 8pm in New York.

Monterrey’s latitude, about 25 degrees north, gives it a warmer and sunnier climate than Guadalajara or Mexico City. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 38 degrees Celsius. The city’s summer daylight runs long, with sunsets past 8pm in June, creating extended evening windows for outdoor events and street life.
