Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859 under the Kanagawa Treaty, one of the “unequal treaties” signed under pressure from Commodore Perry’s Black Ships. The city became Japan’s main window to the outside world, and its port district still carries the layered architecture of that era: Western-style brick warehouses (Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse), Chinese merchant buildings, and the grid of the foreign settlement.
