Brisbane is Queensland’s capital and Australia’s third-largest city. It runs on Australia/Brisbane: UTC+10, year-round. No daylight saving time. Queensland’s refusal to observe DST is one of Australia’s most persistent internal timezone disputes.
During summer, Sydney and Melbourne on the same meridional strip observe Eastern Daylight Time (UTC+11), while Brisbane stays on UTC+10. From October to April, travelers between Brisbane and Sydney must account for a one-hour difference despite the cities being 920 kilometers apart on roughly the same longitude.
The DST referendums
Queensland held a DST referendum in 1992, rejecting it after the 1989–1992 trial. The vote was heavily split along geographic lines: Southeast Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast) leaned toward DST for economic alignment with Sydney. Rural and northern Queensland strongly opposed it, arguing that DST made no practical sense for farmers and that the northern latitudes of Queensland (Cairns, Townsville) have minimal daylight variation anyway.
The arguments haven’t changed much since. Brisbane’s business community periodically raises the issue, noting that firms in Brisbane operate one hour out of sync with Sydney’s financial markets from October to April. The standard response from Queensland governments is that the last referendum decided the question.
Consistent light, sub-tropical city
At 27 degrees south, Brisbane has more daylight variation than northern Queensland but less than Sydney. June sunrise around 6:45am, sunset around 5:15pm. December sunrise around 4:50am, sunset around 6:40pm. The subtropical climate is warm year-round.
The time conversion from Brisbane to London is ten hours ahead in winter. Bunbury in Western Australia uses UTC+8.
